Bleach kills surface mould on non-porous materials. On porous surfaces - timber, drywall, grout, concrete - it fails. Short Answer: Does Bleach Kill Mould
Bleach kills mould on the surface of non-porous materials but cannot penetrate porous materials to reach the root structure underneath. On tiles and sealed countertops it works. On wood, drywall, and grout it removes the visible stain while leaving the mould alive beneath the surface. Bleach fumes also degrade indoor air quality and cause respiratory irritation, which matters particularly for occupants with chemical sensitivities, weakened immune systems, or chronic lung diseases.
How Bleach Works
The active ingredient in household bleach is sodium hypochlorite, typically at 3–5% concentration in water. Sodium hypochlorite is an oxidising agent. It reacts with organic matter on contact, breaking down the proteins and cell walls of mould organisms at the surface level.
The oxidising reaction is fast and visible — the discolouration from mould stains bleaches out within minutes, which creates the impression of complete removal. The limitation is that the reaction only occurs at the point of direct contact. Bleach sits on top of a surface. It doesn't travel into the material below.
Bleach also evaporates. The sodium hypochlorite oxidises and off-gases, and what remains after a few minutes is predominantly water — which on a porous surface adds moisture rather than removing it.
Why Bleach Often Fails To Kill Mould
Mould is not just the dark staining you can see. The visible portion is the fruiting body — the surface expression of a much larger structure called mycelium. Mycelium is a network of microscopic threads called hyphae that grow into and through surfaces, feeding on organic matter in the material itself.
On a porous surface like timber or drywall, bleach reaches the fruiting body and destroys it. The stain disappears. The mycelium below the surface is unaffected and continues feeding. Within weeks, the surface mould returns from the same root structure — and many occupants repeat the bleach treatment, creating a cycle that never resolves the underlying problem.
Bleach also does not neutralise mould spores reliably. Spores on surfaces that the solution doesn't reach directly, or spores that have already become airborne, survive and settle elsewhere.
Bleach Contains Water — It Can Feed Mould
Household bleach is approximately 95% water. On non-porous surfaces — glass, sealed tiles, acrylic — that water evaporates quickly and presents no risk. On porous materials, the water component absorbs into the surface and raises the moisture content of the material. Elevated moisture is the condition mould needs to sustain growth. Applying bleach to mouldy drywall or timber can actively worsen the problem by introducing moisture to a material already at risk.
Bleach Only Works On Non-Porous Surfaces
Non-porous surfaces that bleach treats effectively include glazed ceramic tiles, glass, stainless steel, sealed porcelain, fibreglass shower surrounds, acrylic tubs, and sealed laminate countertops. These surfaces have no internal pore structure for mould hyphae to penetrate, so surface-level disinfection is sufficient.
Avoid bleach on timber, drywall, plaster, grout, concrete, natural stone, and any unsealed or semi-porous material. On these surfaces, bleach is cosmetic. It removes the visible stain and creates a false impression of complete removal while leaving the mould alive and the moisture problem unchanged.
When Bleach Works: Practical Uses
Bleach is a reasonable choice for small, isolated mould patches on bathroom tiles, shower screens, acrylic tubs, and sealed kitchen benchtops — provided the affected area is small, well-ventilated, and the surface is confirmed non-porous.
Diluted bleach solution also works for disinfecting bins, hard plastic surfaces, and sealed bathroom fittings where mould is surface-level and the material won't absorb moisture.
Check the surface finish before applying bleach. Some coloured grout, natural stone tiles, and certain enamel finishes discolour permanently on contact with sodium hypochlorite. Test an inconspicuous spot first.
How To Mix Bleach Safely
For mould removal on non-porous surfaces, mix one part household bleach to ten parts water. Prepare the solution fresh immediately before use — sodium hypochlorite degrades rapidly in solution and a mix left overnight loses much of its efficacy.
Never mix bleach with ammonia-based cleaners, acidic cleaners, or vinegar. The reaction produces toxic chlorine gas. This is not a minor risk: chlorine gas in an enclosed space causes severe respiratory damage quickly. Keep bleach separate from every other cleaning product, and label your spray bottles clearly.
How To Apply Bleach Correctly
Put PPE on before handling bleach. Wear rubber gloves, eye protection, and old clothing. For enclosed spaces or extended cleaning sessions, wear a half-face respirator — bleach fumes at cleaning concentrations cause throat and airway irritation and are particularly harsh for people with asthma or chemical sensitivities.
Open windows fully and run an exhaust fan before you begin. Bleach off-gasses during application and continues to release fumes for several minutes after. Adequate ventilation is not optional in a bathroom or laundry — enclosed spaces concentrate fumes to levels that cause runny nose, stinging eyes, and respiratory irritation fast.
Spray the solution onto the surface, or apply with a cloth. Leave it for ten minutes. Contact time is what determines efficacy — wiping immediately after application reduces the kill rate significantly. After ten minutes, scrub the surface with a brush or cloth, rinse with clean water, and dry the area. Leaving bleach residue on a surface can damage some finishes and irritates skin on contact.
Alternatives That Actually Kill Mould
Hydrogen peroxide is the most practical alternative to bleach for most household mould removal. At 3% concentration — the standard strength available from pharmacies and supermarkets — it kills mould on contact, penetrates semi-porous surfaces better than bleach, and breaks down into water and oxygen with no toxic residue. It also doesn't produce the fumes that make bleach difficult to use in enclosed spaces.
White vinegar undiluted kills around 80% of common mould species on contact and penetrates into semi-porous surfaces to a useful degree. It's safe for households with children and pets, produces no toxic byproducts, and leaves a residue that inhibits regrowth. The limitation is that it's less effective than hydrogen peroxide against established colonies on hard surfaces and doesn't match the kill rate of commercial biostatic treatments.
Borax mixed to a solution of one cup per four litres of water cleans mould from non-porous and semi-porous surfaces and leaves a residue that resists regrowth. It's low toxicity and doesn't off-gas harmful fumes. Less common in Australian households than vinegar but available at hardware stores.
Commercial biostatic treatments formulated for mould remediation achieve higher kill rates than any consumer product and provide longer residual protection. Trained technicians use these for professional mould removal where surface-level consumer products are insufficient.
Hydrogen Peroxide: How To Use It
Fill a spray bottle with 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. Spray the affected area and leave it for ten minutes without wiping. The solution breaks down the cell walls of mould organisms on contact and continues working through the contact period.
After ten minutes, scrub with a brush or microfibre cloth and wipe away the residue with a clean damp cloth. For mould staining on grout, scrub with a toothbrush and repeat the application if deep staining persists. On timber and semi-porous surfaces, allow the area to dry without rinsing — the residue continues working as it dries.
Hydrogen peroxide also bleaches mould staining on many surfaces, so the result is cosmetically similar to bleach without the penetration failure on porous materials.
Safety, Health, And Air Quality
Bleach fumes are volatile organic compounds that irritate the respiratory system. In a small enclosed bathroom with inadequate ventilation, concentrations build fast. Occupants with asthma, chronic lung disease, or chemical sensitivities should not be present during bleach treatments. Clear the room and ventilate for at least 30 minutes after cleaning before occupants re-enter.
For heavy treatments — large surface areas, prolonged exposure, or repeated applications — wear a half-face respirator with organic vapour cartridges rather than a basic dust mask. A dust mask provides no protection against bleach fumes.
Hydrogen peroxide at 3% produces no toxic fumes and requires only standard gloves and eye protection. It is the safer option for households where vulnerable occupants are present.
Black Mold, Large Infestations, And Professionals
Porous materials with significant mould penetration need removing, not cleaning. Cut out affected drywall, bag insulation, and discard timber framing that has been colonised through the grain. No consumer product — bleach, hydrogen peroxide, or vinegar — kills mould growing inside a porous material. Physical removal of the material is the only lasting solution.
Black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum) requires professional remediation. Disturbing a black mold colony without proper containment releases a high concentration of spores into the air. Professional remediation includes physical containment barriers around the affected area, negative pressure to prevent cross-contamination, specialist PPE, HEPA air filtration units running throughout the job, and clearance air sampling after completion to confirm the result.

Preventing Regrowth: Stop Moisture That Feeds Mould
Mould returns to the same spots because the moisture source hasn't been addressed. Cleaning the surface is maintenance, not a fix.
Fix plumbing leaks within 48 hours. A slow drip inside a wall keeps material moisture above 20% indefinitely, regardless of how often you clean the surface expression.
Run a dehumidifier in any room that holds above 60% relative humidity regularly. Target 40–50% as the operating range. Below 50%, mould growth slows significantly. Below 40%, new colonisation becomes difficult to sustain.
Improve ventilation in bathrooms and kitchens. Exhaust fans vented to the outside and running during and for 15 minutes after cooking and showering remove the bulk of moisture before it condenses on walls and ceilings. Poor ventilation is the underlying cause of most recurring bathroom mould problems.
Quick How-To Checklist: Clean Mould Safely
Step 1 — Assess the surface and size. Is it non-porous or porous? Is the area smaller than one square metre? Larger areas or porous materials need professional assessment, particularly in workplaces and other properties that may require commercial mould remediation services.
Step 2 — Put PPE on and ventilate. Gloves, eye protection, P2 respirator. Open windows, run the exhaust fan.
Step 3 — Choose the right product. Non-porous surfaces: diluted bleach or hydrogen peroxide. Semi-porous surfaces: hydrogen peroxide or vinegar. Porous surfaces: physical removal, not cleaning.
Step 4 — Apply, wait, scrub, rinse. Contact time determines efficacy. Ten minutes minimum for bleach and hydrogen peroxide. One hour for vinegar.
Step 5 — Discard porous materials with deep contamination. Bag in heavy plastic, seal, and bin as contaminated waste. Don't clean materials the mould has grown through.
Step 6 — Dry the area and fix the moisture source. A clean surface that stays damp grows mould again within weeks.
